Twins Fall Short, 5-4, at Philadelphia | The Philadelphia Athletics did just enough to sneak past the Minnesota Twins, 5-4, at Shibe Park. Philadelphia pitcher Aaron Nola, in particular, had a standout performance. Nola picked up the win for Philadelphia, going 8 innings. He gave up 4 runs on 6 hits. He now sports a record of 9-4. Tex Carleton closed the game out for Philadelphia, earning his 2nd save.
Had Matt Olson not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Olson hit a 2-run single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Athletics.
"I'll probably toss and turn tonight," Minnesota manager Jeff Patterson said following the tough loss.
Philadelphia, at 61-22, is 18 games up in the AL. | | | | |
