Americans Sneak By Athletics, 3-2 | In a low-scoring clash between Boston and Philadelphia, pitcher Carl Mays was a difference-maker. The right-hander earned accolades in the 3-2 win. Fred Breining, now 4-1, was credited with the win. He allowed no runs on no hits, while striking out 0 and walking 1. The save went to Nels Potter, his 9th this season.
Had Kyle Schwarber not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Schwarber hit a run-scoring double. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Americans.
"If you pitch well, you give yourself some opportunities," said Boston manager Timothy Keene.
Losses have been few and far between for the Athletics, who are now 20-3. | | | | |
