Redlegs Stymie New York, Take 3-1 Win | Crosley Field was the site of a tense game between the New York Giants and Cincinnati Redlegs.
The Cincinnati Redlegs got a magnificent performance from pitcher John Smiley, who muffled the New York offense en route to a tight 3-1 Redlegs win at Crosley Field. Smiley went 7.2 innings to notch the win. He scattered 4 hits, walked 0, and struck out 5. His record improves to 1-2.
The Redlegs had to work out of trouble in the top of the ninth. The score was 3-1, Cincinnati, with one out. New York, with a runner on 2nd, was mounting a threat. Mel Ott dug in at the plate, but on a 3-1 fastball, he flied out.
