| Yankees Get Past Boston for 4-3 Win | Boston wasted an exceptional performance by pitcher Bruce Hurst, falling to the New York Yankees, 4-3. Hurst threw 7.0 innings of 3-hit ball for the losing team. New York is 7th in the AL with a record of 27-34.
The game was at a stalemate until designated hitter Lou Gehrig came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Boston pitcher Johnny Taylor, he hit a 3-1 cutter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting New York on top, 3-2.
"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Gehrig told a New York Daily News reporter. "Sometimes we just need to relax."
