Cubs Take Down Phillies, 5-4 | The Chicago Cubs defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-4, in NL action at Wrigley Field. Chicago pitcher Buttons Briggs had a standout performance. Chicago reliever Frank Corridon picked up the win to move to 3-3. Erskine Mayer suffered the loss. Picking up the save was Bob Anderson. He's now 7 for 8 in save chances.
Had Zaza Harvey not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Harvey hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Cubs.
"I felt good up there," said Harvey. "I saw the ball well."
The NL-leading Cubs are 66-29. | | | | |
