Doves Come Up Short at St. Louis, 5-4 | The Boston Doves and St. Louis Cardinals provided some drama for the home crowd.
The St. Louis Cardinals withstood an impressive performance by Boston second baseman Cupid Childs to defeat the Doves, 5-4, at Busch Stadium. Childs went 4-4 with 4 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Gary Gentry earned the win for St. Louis. He lasted 8 innings, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits, while striking out 7. With the win, he raised his record to 2-1. The save went to Trevor Rosenthal, his 1st this season.
Charlie Gelbert dealt the Doves a blow in the bottom of the fourth. Batting with the bases loaded and St. Louis leading 1-0, Gelbert, who is rated as the 58th best prospect by BNN, hit a 3-1 splitter for a 2-run single.
"Winning is hard sometimes," said Cardinals manager "Disco" John Conley. "This one was nice to get."
