Cubs Sneak By Phillies, 9-8
Philadelphia got a terrific game from first baseman Fred Luderus. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to Chicago, 9-8. Luderus was 3-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Bob Anderson earned the win after being summoned from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 2 innings. His record is now 2-3. Philadelphia now has a 5-game losing streak.

The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Johnny Evers came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Philadelphia pitcher Kevin Campbell, he hit a first pitch fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Chicago on top, 9-8.

"I like our moxie," said Cubs manager Mike Woodsum.
